Rockporters’ Emu Hatch January’20

Day 35 for egg 2 and day 30 for egg 3. The warm end test has been positive on both. The tilt test is positive on both. Weighed them both again tonight. Egg 2 is still losing too much weight, had to put tape back on a couple sides. Egg 3 did fine weight wise.

Temp is on the higher side. 97.5 to 98. The people I purchased the eggs from said they hatch all of theirs at 99 and 40% humidity. Wasn’t comfortable with 99. They also said these come from regular, blonde and white parents :)

I sound like a lunatic in the spare room whistling and talking to myself! I’m sure you know the feeling.

And... Now the power is trying to go out. Will have a rough night! Luckily we have a generator to power the house, but don’t want to sleep through it and have it out for hours. Have two incubators going and older chicks outside with a heat lamp. Nervous nelly over here.

Hope yours make some moves while you’re away. Wouldn’t it be nice to come home to giant birds in an incubator? Sounds like A is for sure for you.

@ShannonsChimkens Fingers crossed that you didn’t lose power!!

You’re still early in the game. From what I’ve read 36 seems average. I can totally understand your worry though, since already having a few bad eggs. Most things I’ve read say they’re finding lower temps are better, so it’s good you went with the lower temp. 99 is higher than anything I’ve ever read anyone doing. I’m at 97, so I figure day 56-60 is more realistic for hatch.

I totally embarrassed myself the other day, talking and whistling at the eggs. We had company, and I didn’t know it. I’m talking loudly (over brooder, incubator, and furnace noise), baby talk no less, and doing my sorry attempt at whistling, while everyone upstairs had a good laugh at my expense. Unfortunately, it’s the “hi babies, how are mommy’s little emus” routine that gets the best wiggles lol.

Both of our eggs had tilt and a warmer end. I told you day 35 in another post, but for some reason I don’t have video of the wiggle until 1/4. My notes are at the other house with the eggs.

There is still so much that can go wrong, I worry they won’t hatch, but I’m trying to not overthink it.

I am so jealous of your potential colors!!!! Ours are just regular.

Day 54 or 55 here. No action yet.

Egg A continues to wiggle. We are also hearing a single sharp click type noise, from inside the egg.

Egg B, well, it might have subtly wiggled once or twice. Or our eyes may just be playing tricks on us. No bad smell coming from the egg, so time will tell, I guess.

No action yet. We don’t hear Egg A whistling anymore, but it is definitely moving. I’m not sure exactly when it sounded, so I don’t have a grip on when I should start to worry about it not having pipped.

Omg! That sound...

Nothing from B still?

Nothing from B. Sadly, I think we’ve been wishing it along. No movement, no sounds, and it feels differently than A.

So, if A isn’t hatched by morning, I may drill him a safety hole. I know for sure he was whistling yesterday, and for all we know he could have been on Wednesday (no one was here). It’s going to be 72 hours before we know it, and I’m not sure that I want to wait until he sounds weak to do it. We will see what morning brings.
