Roo Attack... Solution on page 4!!

My husband seems to be pretty attached to this guy and is considering making a 'bachelor pad' for him... He's also talking about building a door for the run that would allow me to walk in upright and not stooped over. I'm not set on offing Godzilla yet... I just know what he's capable of and am no longer looking at him as a pet. He's a force to be reckoned with.

Oh my word! I hope you are OK. Did the doctor say if there was going to be permanent scarring? I hope not.

I have 2 words about the rooster-stew pot. Remember that nasty temperament can be handed down to the offspring. A nasty roo has no place in the grand scheme of things. There are too many good ones going into the pot to even consider keeping a bad one.

Good luck and take care.

Mean roosters are just not worth it. I have horrible childhood memories of Leghorn roosters and will not keep leghorns.

That said, we have a youngest son who is "squeaky" and the roosters all hate him.

We have a Welsummer Rooster who has had his two strikes. One more and he is out. I cannot risk anyone getting attacked when they lean over to gather eggs.

So sorry for your injury and the posibility of losing the fancy boy.

But would you rather one of the kids was scarred?

We just had to do the same thing here. It was awful but now that the deed is done, I have to tell you that it really is enjoyable to go to the barn and not worry about being side-swiped by a flying bundle of feathers and spurs.

Its a rotten situation to try to make the best of.

no no no...No permanent damage... except maybe to my psyche. It's really just a nasty scratch. What scared me is how close it was to my eye... and the chunk out of my lower lip hurts like the dickens. I had my son take a picture.

I am on Augmentin from a rooster attack on Sunday. I admit I initiated it because he was continually coming at m e, so I prepared for it and he just happened to catch my finger and slice it ... and it was instantly infected. Please watch your injury for any infection signs. I hhear Vitamin D capsules are good for scars.
So far he is behaving since our episode, but I did more than *hold* him. I firmly ( not harshly) grabbed his neck and slightly twisted-- while talking calmly but firmly. I figure another rooster would mutilate him in determining dominance so a controlled uncomfortable situation is not going to harm his psyche. I plan on another session this weekend to also clip his spurs so they are dull.
My other rooster is behaving since I used that method on him last summer.
Now... I will have two nice roosters. How do I get them to coexist?

I'm usually patient with roo's. Especially since I have RIR's and they have a tendency to be aggressive. I recently broke my 11 month old by dunking him. Worked like a charm. He hasn't come at me in about 10 weeks now. When he started flogging me it was below my knees. I've always had a rule, if one attacks me above the waist he is gone right then. I treat my birds as livestock first and foremost, however they are my pets. If you are going to keep him I suggest you get a hat and some goggles to protect your eyes. You may look a little silly but you could also use a paintball mask with the full face shield. Don't let that roo hurt you anymore, do what you have to do to protect yourself and your family.

I have a scar on my left side just below my ribs that is still tender to the touch at times from a roo that stuck a spur into me 2". This happened almost 35yrs ago and I went through hell with the infections and treatments for almost 2yrs to get it somewhat healed.

Try covering his head with a sock or something that will prevent him from seeing. Begin to stroke his back gently until he is still. After a few minutes remove the sock or whatnot and from my experience, the roo's face will turn from bright RED to mild PINK...almost as if the blood has rushed from his head and calm overpowers his instinct to attack...and trust me, he LOVES TO ATTACK

.
I mean, this little banny roo's passion is chasing our mini-doxi around the yard like he owes him money.

I think the only reason he attacked above the waist is because I was doubled over shoo-ing his girls from making a break for it. I'm still undecided as to Godzilla's fate... all I know is that I want to do what's right for my family. Until then, Godzilla is in jail.
