I have 2 small children, but I also have 2 hands. They like to follow me in the coop. I prefer to allow it when not so very many chickens are with me and especially when its mainly hens. If its just hens and only a few, I might let the children have their way around the coop, but with the rooster in there with us, I will have the children holding my hands and I will be watching. Sure the roosters are fine now, but it only takes one time of me not paying attention, to be sorry forever. In fact I am sorry, because it happened to my nephew 11 years ago, but I thought his mom would know to watch her baby......my bad. But now I take full responsibility. If anyone gets jumped, it will be me.
If I can't control a rooster, I can't see any reason that someone else would be able to, so I guess I would change his name to Gumbo, but I would think that if he stays in timeout and the kids keep away you could get your sex-links and replace him before you make his final arrangements.
