Roo covered in lice or mites

shampoo with dog flea and tick and then treat externally with Ivomec pour on..not injectable.... keep out of mouth and eyes..

Ivomec does not work on lice, only bugs that take "blood" meals.

I recommend a horse spray called ultrashield by absorbine. It works wonders and has 17 day weatherproof protection. (for horses, but it seems to last a long time on the birds too)

I spray once under the wings, the back of the neck and the fluff of the butt.

Ivomec is the only thing that worked on lice here 2 years ago. I tried everything else I could think of and nothing worked. I battled lice for 3 months. The Ivomec finally got rid of the lice permantly.

Diatomaceous Earth (DE) is what I would use. The mites will not hurt the bird in the short run. DE is completely natural and non toxic and completely safe for the bird (and you too). I use DE in the dust bathtub and for moisture control in the coop. I work in the pest control industry and this stuff works. It may take a few days but it is persistent (as long as it doesn't get wet). It has been shown to be effective, to a degree, in killing the eggs too. None the less if you re-apply every two to three days or so for two weeks, that should take care of the problem. Be sure to get the food grade DE, not the stuff for pool filters etc. Many farm supply store carry it. You can also get it from decency garden stores.

Ivomec, but you've got the dose too high. It's one-tenth ml (one-tenth cc) for a 5-10 pound LF and even less for a bantam. If you use pour-on it's two-tenths for a LF.

Injectable is fine; it's in propylene glycol and will spread around the skin pretty well. You can repeat the dose if you need to, every 10-14 days.

You can also use a 40:1 dilution of neem oil (your health food store likely has it) in water.

Now that he's there, unless your friend has practiced unbelievably strict quarantine the whole flock and the housing needs to be done. Everybody in the flock can have that dose of ivomec. For the housing, probably the gentlest thing is spinosad spray from your home center; it comes as a hose-end spray and should be used to wet down the entire coop and nesting areas until it gathers and runs off (in other words, get it wet, not just lightly misted). The great thing about spinosad is that it takes a couple hours to work so the mites carry it to each other. One wet mite can kill hundreds of hidden ones. That means it actually works better the worse the infestation is - and it keeps working for 14-21 days.

Do you spray over and under the feathers to get it all down deep in there?

Thanks,

Kristen

you can spray the adams flea & tick spray the way pips & peeps said....

spray once under the wings, the back of the neck and the fluff of the butt under the feathers.

you have to spray again when the eggs hatch if there are any....... this kills all of our bugs.... lice and mites. Mice and birds can bring in bugs and they can be picked up from shows, swaps....etc.

I found 4 mites in my hay today...4...and I freaked out. I clean out my chicken-condo twice per week. I do EVERYTHING right...except I introduced a new seemingly healthy chicken from a reputable grower without isolating it 1st, and BAM...mites. I have found none on my chickens...only the 4 in the hay. I scrubbed my condo with soap and water and then applied a spray from Gordosn, Permethrin-10% diluted 1 part insecticide to 19 parts water. As soon as it hit the mites they were dead! Sprayed the inside of the condo, all cracks and doors. Then dusted my 2 chickens with Guardstart Garden and Poultry Dust 25% Permethrin by putting the smaller one in a bag up to the top of the neck and gently "shake-n-bake" the big chickie-baby got doused with a converted baby powder container that you can control by squeezing...found it to be easier. Total cost..$4.99 each at Tractor Supply
