Roo has huge spurs

My roo has massive spurs they r about 8cm long. Should I trim them. Will they harm the hens

they will hurt the hens and U if he is aggressive i suggest trimming them with dog clippers it wont even hurt if he is wild catch him by the legs hold him upside down and put a blanket over him that should calm him down

Yeah you should trim them but not to short or you will get there meat bone and be very painful i don't know how big your rooster is or what breed it is all i know is that if you do trim them he will sleep more comfortable, walk easier, cause less damage if he attack a hen or another

Dont flip them the reason they calm down is because you are suffocating it they have air sacks not lungs

Will try to catch him but may be tough as he is free ranging on my grandparents farm and sleeps In the tractor shed. He's really gentle to me and the hens and is calm when I catch him, if I catch him! But will be more difficult for my frizzle when his spurs grow

Will use the net for my pond but may be a bit small as he is half brahma

Instead of cutting you can "despur" Mr. roo. DO GET A HELPER, Once you catch him, wrap him in a towel very securely covering his head. Get a pair of pliers and grasp the spur with them close to the leg. hold leg very securely and start to apply pressure to the spur till roo feels it and starts to squirm, once he is used to the pressure start to rotate the spur back and forth till you feel it start to move very freely, once that happens you can slide it off the leg. There will be a little blood loss. There is also a video on U-Tube [that is where I learned this]. It is so EZE and much less invasive than cutting....ITS great! THEN you can clean up the spur, drill a hole in the end and make necklaces for the kids.
