A friend of mine has a Cochin roo 7-8 months old. This evening we noticed he was limping and had a red line going up his leg. It isn’t bloody - almost looks raw. Any insight as to what this could be?

The red line is a sign of his active hormones. On roosters with light legs, this is visible. This isn't visible on black and slate colored legs.
Going on the redness around the feather shafts on his foot feathers and the crud on his feet, he may be suffering from ammonia irritation from strolling through barnyard poop. I suggest treating him to a spa foot soak every week and spraying his feet every so often with Vetericyn to knock down the bacteria and irritation.
Thanks again!Any foot irritation or injury is going to cause pain. You probably know what it feels like when you have a blister on your foot. You probably limp a little from the pain. Chickens feel the same sort of discomfort.
I don't see anything that needs any more involved treatment other than the little bit I mentioned. A five minute soak in Epsom salts and spraying with Vetericyn every day can make the little guy feel much better. Spraying with the Vetericyn takes less time than it did to write this.
