We want to use our 5x10 dog run as a run for our coop (with the coop inside but elevated so the chickens can go under it), but I don't know what the best method of constructing a roof would be. The top has an A-frame metal attachment like this, but the tarp it came with was incredibly flimsy and got ripped to pieces by the wind.

I'd like something rain proof as we're in Louisiana and it rains an awful lot here. We could remove the a-frame top, if that would make it easier on us.

Any suggestions/ideas? I was originally going to do another tarp but I just can't see it fairing much better than the last one. Someone had suggested we sandwich the tarp between layers of chicken wire, would that maybe work better?

That top frame looks perfect for some tin (Like you see on metal roof) You could even get the plastic kind, to keep the heat down.

What you could do is run some 2x4's along the roof bows, front to back and do as stated above and attach some steel roofing
to the 2x4's.
Would be what you see in a farm shop or similar.

Yeah, we figured that was the best option (probably the plastic, not the tin because of heat like you said) but I have no experience er, building things and my husband's only ever done road construction type work, so we're not entirely sure how to connect it to the existing frame so that it stays on correctly, connects at the apex (they sell...runners or something to go along that part right?) and doesn't cause the whole kennel to flip over in the wind from being top heavy, messing up all the chicken wire along the way- ESPECIALLY that part. We haven't had a direct hit from a hurricane in a while, but it definitely doesn't take much to send sheds and such things flying all over the place and I'm fairly certain DH would kill my if my 'chicken project' cost us a window from tumbling hardware somewhere along the line...

Sorry, my ignorance is showing.

edit: By plastic, did you mean polycarbonate?
