Rookie Coop Building Mistakes?

Scott,

The coop will be secure, very secure.. I just wonder abou the run. I'm in a residential neighborhood so I don't have the country predators that I normally would have to worry about. And me nor my neighbors have ever seen a raccoon.

Do oppossums or armadillos pose any type of threat?

Fox, coyote and raccoons are very much urban and suburban animals. My son saw a coyote running across a 4-lane highway in St. Paul, MN. You may not have seen a raccoon (yet) because you don't have chickens. Chickens are at the bottom of the food chain, and all kinds of things will show up once they know your birds are there.

Going back to the "build the coop before buying chicks" thing...

I wonder if human nature is such that most of us would NEVER finish a coop if we didn't have a brooder full of chicks in our bathroom/basement/garage/wherever.

My coop WILL be done at the end of the week, but probably only because the master bathroom is given over to The Girls.

I have this now in a Brand new coop. I'm seriously thinking about tearing this out and putting the shelf type system on both sides of the coop instead of this tiered system on one side. The poop self looks super easy to maintain. With this I have to shovel it all out the door.

So, your advice is is really intended for idiots, not me, right "dear"? LOL
Cause Im sure this wont be a problem for me.

Here's my two cents to add,
Chesty puller asked about ventilation, there is a ventilation page, search for "go out and cut more holes in your coop" to find it. When you 'add' up all the cracks around doors, soffit vents, windows etc it should be one sqft of holes per bird.
And no one had mentioned the number one rookie mistake: buying your chicks before the coop is built

Hi tweetysvoice!
I am glad to know that I'm not alone on this one! Although, I agree that I would sleep much more soundly at night if my coop was already complete.
I loved looking at all of the pictures of your chicks during the first few weeks of life. I would love to see pictures of the girls now that they are older and especially coop pics once you finish your three day coop building marathon!
I imagine there is a coop building marathon in my near future as well...

I've been really lazy about updating the blog, but I'm working on it tonight! You can check out the new pages (starting with Day 17) and see the chicks growing up!
I'm adding the building marathon to it as well :) Day one is down!

I would like to suggest lining the lower 24 to 36 inches of your run with 1/4 inch hardware fabric (wire).

Our biggest mistake was using only chicken wire on the run. We found out the hard way a raccoon will reach through chicken wire to grab a chicken. That discovery was followed by frantic trip to the store for polysporin ointment and betadyne. ... Happy ending...Emma survived :)
