It was so easy! I didn't even have to chop down any trees, I just walked down to a huge walnut tree that is ALWAYS dropping branches, found 2 strong branches that had fallen, and cut them both 6' long. Then I found 5 smaller branches and cut them down to about 4 1/2 ft. This is what I came up with-

With the EE rooster, Barred Rooster, and a few Buff Orps...

With a fluffy Black Australorp hen tail

Hope this helps you all, they haven't used it yet but I bet they'll like it! At least it isn't way too small like their last one.
P.S. Sorry for the mess, I cleaned up their coop and realized that I was out of wood chips. I need to pick up some wood chips soon, that looks really messy.

I used screws that were about 2" long and a drill. I started with nails and a hammer, but the drill was faster. Either would work though.

I didn't even cut down any trees. If you just have a couple good sized branches, and a few smaller ones, you can build this. I just used the strongest fallen branches from a huge tree near our house. Its a maple tree, and it is always dropping branches.

I like the natural idea

We have Sugar Maples, so I know what you are talking about, lol! We have a slight wind, and it's a guarantee that you will have branches to pick up...they are healthy looking trees otherwise.

edited because my fingers are too fast for my brain

I made my roosts from large branches I found in the woods, I really think it is better since it is like the wild where they would normally live.

Mine is much smaller but the same idea, very nice, mine seem to like it also.

Thats a great roost! I love the natural for my hens as well. This last summer, I made a roost in the run for the BO. No nails or screws. I used the branches from the thicket..and Wisteria vines to tether it all together. The little ladder is for Frizz Frizz...she likes to sit with the big girls...but cant fly up there.
