Roost for Chicks....

Ok- so the roost that my DH built is actually a 2x4 with a piece of particle board nailed to it standing up. I didn't realize it was on a 2x4!

That roost is awesome! We need to add something like that.

We have all sorts of little toys for the girls to play with (they are just over 3 weeks now)...ramps and roosts and random rectangles to hop around on. Just dug through the box of scrap wood and went to town. They LOVE it! Ack, they are just so cute

My 1 week old barred rock chicks like to sit on the makeshift roost I put in their brooder.

I'm using an old rabbit/guinea pig cage and I used a 1 x 1 stake that I had on hand (I use them to stake tomato plants) and stuck it through the slats in their cage. Its only about 3 inches off their ground..

We used an old broom handle through the corner about 8" off the ground with a 2x4 ramp. Our chicks are flying up and sitting on the handle and flying off. They are so cute walking up and sliding down the ramp!

We put a yard stick through the sides of the guinea pig cage we are using for the chicks.. they are 4 weeks old today.. have been just moving it up a little...

I added an apple branch when they were a week old, and they wrestle for turns. I used a couple pieces of 2x2 for the supports and made them different heights, about 5" and 7"; just attached little 'feet' for the uprights to stand alone then drilled holes for the branch to run through. You can kind of see it here...

This last week I had to build a bigger brooder but only had room to go up, not out, so I added a loft and a ladder. They're almost three weeks old and learned to master that ladder within an hour. They sail off the loft to the bottom (still stops my heart!), and many times I've counted 5 ladies on that little roost.

I put a roost in with mine at around 2 1/2 weeks and they loved it then and act like they couldn't live without it now. I used a stick from the woods attached to some scrap pieces of dimensional lumber at about 4" tall.

My chicks are 5 days old, and they have enjoyed roosting/playing from day 1. They have a stick mounted from outdoors, and two bricks. They play on them and will sleep as well. Most still sleep on the shavings though.

I have mine in large guinea pig and rabbit cages, and I picked up large sticks from the ponderosa pines in my yard, and pushed them through the wires to make them steady. The chicks love them.

I used a piece of bamboo and wrapped it in grippy tape so they didnt slip since they are new at roosting and dont quite have it down yet and mine a a week old and 5 days old
