My youngest hen, really a 5-1/2mo pullet - has been laying for about a month now (Early Bloomer?)

The problem is she sometimes lays while roosting and unless her butt is positioned over the shavings...SPLAT!

She does lay in the nestboxes, so it seems she just doesn't wake up enough to get off the roost or ????

She's a smart cookie - knows by sight the bucket I keep scratch in & will run over to stick her head in so the Big Girls don't chase her off the stuff I scatter.
One day she was in a nestbox when she saw me coming with the bucket.
She waddled down the ramp & dropped an egg right in front of me so she could get to the good stuff

It took mine about 2-3 months to stop laying off the roost. In some ways it was really nice (I had very few chickens laying at the time and I could go out to the coop, get another egg for breakfast, let the girls out and come inside to cook it - very multitasking!) but mostly it was annoying because the egg would be poo-ey and would sometimes break.

Make sure any potential nighttime light source has been extinguished as that can potentiate roost laying.
