Roost to prevent frostbite question

I know this has been discussed on here before but I couldn't find it! I am making another roost for my ever-growing chicks (the same height).

I don't remember if I should put the 2x4 flat or on edge.
Suggestions, please!

Flat! You want the flat edge so they can keep their feet flat and they can cover them with their body/feathers.
