Crap shoot...... be ready for plan B.
Why add a cockerel when you have hatched chicks.....might be a cockerel there?
Might want to start a new thread for your particular situation.

Starting a thread was my intention, but I thought I’d read through some first in hopes of my question already being answered. For the most part I did find an answer to my immediate question, but I just thought I’d throw out the question about the littles. Sorry to the OP.

To Mimi's 13 - how are you for hideouts, do your chicks have a safety zone. I would think it would be ok, enough to give it a chance. But it would be when I have a couple of days to observe pretty carefully to see how it went.

And with any rooster, any time, a plan B ready to go and use, is a good idea.

Thank you, @Mrs. K, for responding. I’m good to go with hideouts.

I went ahead and jumped into the deep end of the chicken pool today and turned the fella out. He was very good. Two skirmishes, both started by a pullet. He gingerly made his way out of the first and my LGD slowly moved in between the two on the second. Neither amounted to much. But best of all, even though he was curious about the noise from the chicks, he didn’t pay them much mind at all. His thoughts were definitely on all the pullets, but the little chicks were ready to run if he had turned out to be as bad as the RIR pullet. All in all, it was a good day.

I can only hope. I don’t have much luck with raising good ones...so far anyway.
