Rooster behavior

Dusty Chicken - are you in our coop and run every morning?

Our rooster (Silver Cuckoo Maran) does the same thing, and I had to laugh at your description of the hens not wanting to be the first one out of the coop.

There are days when our hens don't fly down off the perches for a couple minutes or so. Our rooster is walking around the run in circles ... and sure enough, the first hen out gets chased.

I stand there for a while and if he tries to mount a hen I don't let him to make sure he understands I am in charge. Every once in a while, he'll get all focused and fluffed up at my feet and I can tell he's thinking about attacking my feet but I convince him that this would be unwise.

MarieI37 your description totally matches mine. The last couple of weeks he has suddenly really mellowed out. We had our first real snow storm this week & the temps dropped down into the mid 20's. He has been so mellow that he is actually going back in to roost with the girls. I am hoping this is the beginning of a little maturity, or maybe that is just my wishful thinking? I be curious to see him grow out of his adolescence..... He has been very respectful to me since we had an encounter a couple months ago. I am keeping my fingers crossed!
