Dusty Chicken - are you in our coop and run every morning?
Our rooster (Silver Cuckoo Maran) does the same thing, and I had to laugh at your description of the hens not wanting to be the first one out of the coop.
There are days when our hens don't fly down off the perches for a couple minutes or so. Our rooster is walking around the run in circles ... and sure enough, the first hen out gets chased.
I stand there for a while and if he tries to mount a hen I don't let him to make sure he understands I am in charge. Every once in a while, he'll get all focused and fluffed up at my feet and I can tell he's thinking about attacking my feet but I convince him that this would be unwise.
