Okay- I've been trying to get rid of 5 of my six roosters since winter hit with no luck! I have 5 hens and everyone seemed to be getting along until today. I don't know if they've gotten cabin fever all of a sudden, or what but one of my "lesser" Buff Brahma roosters has been outside of the coop, in the run all day. We live in Upstate NY with wind, snow and temps lately of 20 and less degrees out. The chickens have all done really well so far, no frostbite or anything.

The roo that is outside might have had an open bloody spot on the top of his comb- the other birds have tiny black scabs on their combs & waddles from pecking, but nothing more.

I don't have a way to separate him and keep him out of the elements...
Should I just keep an eye on them?

The inside coop has about 24 square feet for them to run around in, the outside run has 60 square feet at least and they have outside access all the time. There is enough food and water for all, all the time....

You have a huge area for them.... 5 roos is a lot for 5 hens, but you have enough room to put him in and section it off for him. If only to keep him alive until spring, some crates (pallets) and string would do it......wait, 24 square feet? what are the dimensions? Even outside, if you set him up a few pallets with perhaps a tarp or something over them in a teepee style to help him stave off the elements, he might be better off.

You should separate him. The others could kill him. Build something for him to keep him warm. Being alone the cold weather, especially with the wind, is going to be hard on him. As a last resort bring him to an animal shelter or have him and the other roosters processed for the dinner table.

I grew up in Buffalo and wouldn't want to be out in that weather.
