Rooster Chat

Thank you cabinchicky. Don't worry. I'm very realistic about dealing with my boys. I love them, but I also respect them and treat them like roosters. They are not pets. They have a job to do and as far as Larry is concerned, the head rooster doesn't let him have his way with any of his ladies and he considers them ALL as his ladies.

Amelia Egghart, I agree with you whole heartedly. I've put a lot of effort into Larry all ready and will have to make a decision about him at some point. If I knew somebody who would caponize him I would do it in a minute so he would just live out his life peaceably. I don't. SO my next step if he doesn't settle down will be to separate him and the extra roosters I have from the main flock and see if that will calm him down. I suspect not.

Before I admit defeat, I want to be sure in my own mind that I have explored all possibilities before I act. Dead is a permanent and long time solution.

Microchick, there is a thread called Show Off Your Roosters and I believe Queen Misha knows how ti caponize. I think she shared a link how to not long ago if you wish to try that.

i have 5 roos 2 are Aussies one big blue & one big splash roo, both are very sweet boys Plus i have a SLW roo & a CW roos both are sweet boys who are just turning a year & living together in a giant enclosure but none of my roos are out with the hens, i keep them for breeding to their own breed, all depending on which kind of chicks i want, so all my hens are free range o & the 5th roo is a giant NHR about 2 years old but he became very aggressive at 18 months old & so he is living in a giant pen of his very own were he cant hurt any one, but i have been the only one he likes..

Well, I gripe about my roo being a butthead to most people so I wanted to take a minute and say that he is tops when it comes to foraging, fertilizing and protecting. I'm not thrilled how he treats humans but his behavior with hens makes up for it. Also, he's a gorgeous roo. Only 5 months old but looks the part of a RIR roo straight out of the books.

This is Colton @ 22weeks. (My bragging pic)

I guess I'm unusual, I've never had a rooster show aggression towards any people. I have 3 large breeds, 2 buff Orpingtons and a barnevelder. I also have 11 bantam roosters. I've had many different breeds and all have never bothered me. I don't handle them and will chase them off during their naughty teenage faze if they are making troubles. My birds are 100% free range so good roosters are very valuable. I personally wouldn't put up with any aggression, I was terrorized by roosters as a kid, I don't need that I'm my adult life. I'm gonna follow this thread because I love all things rooster.

Well, my Lavender O rooster, Larry Bird and I are still at war but the battle has taken on a new twist. My other three roosters are keeping an eye on him and when he starts his threatening posture towards me, they get between me and him and put him in his place.

I have never before now heard of a rooster protecting the treat lady.

Dumb animals indeed.
