I wish i could have a farm then i could have all kinds of animals
Yoddel...at the end of his crow he adds a sound that almost sounds like he's laughing...check out YouTube "Laughing Chickens" it's hilarious! Yes they have chickens that sound like they're laughing! It's probably the only case when someone really wants a rooster! They have laughing contests! Wonder how long it will be before someone imports some of them? Check it out!

I have a dilemma T.T i love my little indie but my mom thinks i should give him away cause he'll be a a"handful" when he grows up. Somebody is even willing to take him but ive already gotten attatched. I have five girls for him. Is that even enough? Will he grpw up to be a handful?

Is he friendly? Will he let you handle him without a fuss? If he isn't aggressive and he doesn't make a fuss when you pick him up and handle him, he probably won't be a problem....any rooster...in this case I'm figuring we are talking about a cockrel...Will give you a bit of attitude once in a while. It's the nature of the beast...my favorite big White Rock Rooster, "Roger" bit me twice yesterday, when I was fiddling around with the light in the coop...I saw it coming and it didn't really surprise me....I was worrying him with my fussing about and he was just letting me know he didn't like it. After the second bit I just put my hand on his back and ruffled his feathers till he jumped down from the perch he was on....basically ran him off without hurting him. He didn't try to kick me or anything like that...he isn't mean...he's just doing his job....and his job is to protect his hens from anything he feels is a threat...my strange behavior was worrying him...so he let me know it....5 hens are plenty for one rooster....your mom might not want him crowing at all hours...or she knows he will try you out sooner or later...and with spring coming up...if he's just a baby...his behavior can undergo a major change in the next few months....he might get "Cocky" with you....and he might not back down...if that happens you will have to decide whether or not you want to put up with being assaulted every time you enter the coop or run...or get close to the flock if they are out in the yard....it's crap shoot...you won't really know till he starts to act out. If he becomes aggressive, it will be more of a challenge to find a new home for him...Roosters can be very difficult to find a new home for...most people who are willing to take them, are going to put them in their freezer...so you have to keep that in mind, if that would upset you...one last thing you need to know! Is that you can not make an aggressive rooster change his behavior...I've had dozens of Roosters, past and present...I have never been able to Tame an aggressive rooster...no matter how hard you try. All you will end up with is a rooster who is afraid of you or he's just waiting for your back to be turned to get a shot at you...even with my friendly Roosters I still keep half an eye on them...and move calmly and purposely around them...remember that they are doing just what nature meant them to do....protect their hens. Sorry for running on with this....gotta go to work now...good luck!

Haha thanks thats informative. Yea indies a cockerel and right now hes not aggressive or anything. I can pick him up and hold him though sometimes he runs off before i reach him.

Dear Deleon98, Here's a question for you....Are you planning on having your hens try to hatch out some chicks? Or do you just want to keep your young rooster as a pet? If you think you'd like to try hatching....Will you have enough room for more chickens? And you have a very good chance, if you do, that you will have another rooster to deal with....So...if you don't have room for more birds...and your just keeping him as a pet....I would probably take your mom's advice....and rehome him...

Hes just a pet. I dont need anymore chickens but i do eat eggs lol so i figured i wouldnt have a problem with rehoming chicks or roosters. Its just that i got attatched to him :p ik im probably asking for trouble though arent i?

I've had to butcher aggressive roosters before. Last year I had a cockerel that was only 3 months old. He was a RIR. Absolutely beautiful coloring. He started crowing at 3 months. Then within a week he was mating with anything he could hop on. I put him in a crate to try to calm him down, the second I let him out, he was back at it. In my experience, if they seem aggressive at a young age, it only gets worse.

My main rooster (speckled Sussex) has spurred me twice. In retrospect, it was partly my fault. They are creatures of habit. I was carrying feed in a huge bowl back to the coop and trying to get everyone to go to bed earlier than usual (daylight savings time). Sue took an attitude, spurred me & knocked the feed bowl out of my arms. Next day, same thing. I put him in an isolated crate to "reset" his attitude. It worked and I've not had any problems at all with him.
