If my Roosters spurs and claws get to long I get someone to hold him and give him a pedicure....they have access to dirt year round...and he does scratch a lot....this keeps his claws under control, for the most part...but if they aren't short and smooth enough....I will clip and file the ends to smooth and blunt them...less likely to harm the hens, during treading...he doesn't appreciate my efforts...but he puts up with it...giving me the "Hairy eyeball" while I clip and file...he thinks I've lost my mind...he may be right!

You get the hairy eyeball only? I wish Fester only did that. I don't speak chicken fully but I am very sure he says some very colorful words any time he is held for any treatment. Probably needs his beak washed with soap.

I had to take my rooster into my bird vet to get them filed down yesterday. I would have needed help doing it on my own & don't have any, so I was glad she offers that service. There would have been no way for me to hold him & round off the points. He's pretty wily for a 2lbs bird!

Are all of their claws hallow or do they have blood vessels to watch for while cutting?
they are just like dog claws...yes there is a Quick, or blood vessel in them. So they will bleed if trimmed to far back...you can see it if the claws are clean and light colored..if you look at the under side it's kind of hollow till the quick starts..just take your time and trim a bit at a time...you'll be able to see where to stop. Giving them a place to dig, helps to keep the claws in control.

Well I finally had to put the young Roos into isolation...with spring on the way, they have been feeling their oats and beating the check out of the girls....set up a temporary pen and tossed them in as I caught them....I've got the Roos down to the old guys and Roger, Larry and Christopher....oh and one "Wild Strain" AC from the eBay eggs....pretty boy all black and white...he's keeping his beak shut....and laying low...I think he's trying to look like a hen...but things have sure settled down and relaxed. The boys are bound for the freezer as soon as I have the time. We can make more where those cam from. All 9 youngsters, 10 if I include the hide out in the coop. Well they had a good time while they could. Good times never last for ever. Specially if you're an extra cockrel and no one wants cockrels...if they take them they end up in their freezer...They might as well end up in mine. Now the hens are starting to go broody....

Hey im still new to figuring out the forum. I am also new to having roosters. I have one and can't keep him. He's a pretty leghorn. He is a little less than a yr old. I really want to find him a nice home with other chickens and roosters. We don't have a big enough area for him to be a rooster. We want him to be able to roam and make baby chickens. Free to a good home. If anyone is interested or knows someone who would want a rooster send me a message please and thanks for your time.

Hi everyone, just wanted to share my weird, yet loveable rooster Nero. He's currently lounging on his side awaiting belly rubs. I'd say he thinks he's a dog except he's never been around a dog! He's also the first to hide if there's a hawk. Self preservation is strong with this one.

Anyone else have a useless yet lovable rooster?

And while he's not the greatest protector, he does.... Spend his time with the girls. I'm down to two hens after a neighbor's dog attacked (Nero was fine, of course). I'm hoping that by adding a few more the damage he causes will be less. He's only 11 months old at the moment; will be become less... Amorous with maturity?

Thanks!
