Rooster Chat

I have 5 roosters. One year old Buff Orpington, Two Welsummer, One, Lavender Orpington also a year old and a little 11 week old brat who is the son of the Buff O rooster and Buff O hen.

Why am I addicted to these boys? Seriously. All but Red and little Red Jr. Aka Rocky (he was abandoned in the shell and I helped him hatch in the kitchen. Even helped him out of his shell) have so many infractions against them, so many foot ball carries, so many threats of being re-homed or at the worse, joining us for Sunday dinner and yet they are still around.

Don't get me wrong. I got rid of two roosters last year because they tried to kill the Welsummer roosters, but I tend to forgive the behind the back ankle attack from one of the Welsummers and the in your face lady attitude of the Lavender O. I've ran laps around the run, hot on the tail of one of the three recalcitrant musketeers, carried them around like footballs at the Superbowl. Carried them upside down longer than I care to admit all the while admonishing them with threats of giving them to the Amish and 'you know what they think about chickens!'

Okay, I admit, I love my hens, sweet, uncomplaining girls that they are, but those sassy, brassy, arrogant sometimes aggressive roosters just are my favorites. Maybe it is their attitude. I'm a natural redhead....used to be before mother nature decided that I had two choices, stay a redhead or go natural, so I went natural. Maybe I see a little of that redhead fire in them that reminds me of me.

I dunno. Maybe I just need to start a home for wayward bad boy roosters and admit defeat. They don't lay eggs, but they are always good for a chuckle or two during the day.

I have a couple of roos, 3 with my hens, 1 thats sick and friends with the geese, and 3 banty roos that form a little gang.

The three with my hens are an easter egger, black laced red Wyandotte, and a very big black mix breed. The one that hangs around with my geese is a black copper maran. My little bantam gang is made up of my silver duckwing oegb, my brothers silver pencil cochin, and my new hamphire they go around terroizing the hens who run away waiting their roos to come save them.

i also had 2 other roos who just passed away a black copper maran who was the leader and my bigger black laced red roo which was the second in command, they died due to sickness thats been going around. I also have one little bantam who is about 3 months old cockeral with 2 pullets.

Well,

I had a little run-in with my RIR Roo today. In a way, I was the cause of the fracas. I picked up my little EE hen and she took exception to it. She used to be very docile but they've all been free-ranging for 3 months they don't like to be petted or picked up any more. Anyway, I picked her up and she threw a fit. That hornery roo came over all puffed up to protect his girl. I had to shoe him away twice. Then I put her down, admitting defeat.

The Roo and I have come to an agreement most of the time. I'm the boss and won't touch him if he doesn't make aggressive moves towards humans. I crossed the line by messing with his girl. Mixed feelings. Happy and Proud of him for being so protective. Upset because he got aggressive toward me (no matter the reason). Being a chicken with short memory we resumed our normal "you leave me alone, I leave you alone" relationship very quickly after the incident, so I think all is well. Boy is he a feisty one.

My roo is almost a year old and is finally getting saddle feathers!! I was beginning to think he would never get them. He still isnt showing any long hackle feathers. Yes. I know. He has lots of feathers. Ive been told. But every roo pic i have seen shows long, skinny feathers very distinguishable from the rest. Does that mean something bad if they develop that slowly? His spurs are growing and he fertilizes all the girls.... So whats up with the slow manly feathers?

Congrats! Post some pictures soon :)

Some are just slower than others. I like to think a slower development means a longer life :) don't quote me on that, though!

Lol. Ok. Thanks. I have a couple pics of him posted but my fone doesnt get color right. You cant see his pretty green sheen and his orange is impossible to get. If i could get soneone to hold him with a wing out... But nobody want to wrestle him. He is kind of big.

Just when I got my father/son duo of roosters to kind of coexist (only took all winter), it looks like I have at least 1, possibly 2, more in the batch of 5 chicks I hatched last month! I tried to live in denial and tell myself that the 1 chick I'm pretty sure is male was just a large female, but I think I have to just admit my life is about to get crazy again.

This is Ronan (the Destroyer - because I'm a huge nerd for Marvel Comics) and he's the one I think is most likely a male. He's just gigantic compared to the other 3 that hatched the same time he did and he's the only bantam (phoenix) out of the bunch.

Uzisuzuki, that expression on Ronan's face screams rooster. Life getting crazy again, indeed. He's going to be a hand full if he isn't one already. A big attitude in a small package.
