my rooster was eating and in the middle of eating, tried to crow and i think some food went into his throat. he started flapping around, i thought he was being silly, then he fell over and was turning blue! i was like "hes choking!" i tried to do hemlich manuver on his belly like you do with humans but it didnt really work. then my husband gave him mouth to mouth, putting air in his mouth and also sucking some out and i think that dislodged whatever it was and he finally started breathing again! he kinda just sat there for a few minutes i think he was in shock. i had to pick him up and take him to the water and put his head in the water so he would drink. but after a while he was trying to crow and walking around like normal. that was so scary! i hope that never happens to any of mine again! has anyone else ever had that happen? how often does it happen?

I give kuddos to you both for doing the heimlich and "beak to mouth"

GOOD JOB!

I did read on this forum that someone's chicken choked on a long piece of grass but other than that you are the only other one I've read about.

It was probably just a perfect storm of being hungry and asserting his rooster-ness.

thanks. it was so scary and i didnt want to lose him over him choking on food. i would've felt so bad not doing anything and im so happy what we did worked and it was yesterday, fathers day. so happy fathers day to Tommy(the rooster), a barred rock. he gets to stick around longer!
