Rooster comb and wattles turning black, trouble breathing, lethargic

Hmm.. i'm no expert, but I don't think an illness could've taken him that fast. Is was probably something inside him. Hopefully some other kind soul will figure it out! Are you sending him to the chicken lab, or whatever that was?

Yes, we just happen to have a poultry lab about 7 miles from us. I will call them first thing monday morning. I want to know what happened to him.

The lab will want him refrigerated, not frozen. Just an FYI in case you didn't know. So sorry to hear about your roo and I hope your hen gets better soon.

Please keep us updated.

I would really like to know what could take a full grown roo that fast. Sorry for your loss and hope your hen heals quickly.

Memawdarla, that's very sad. I'm sorry Brewster died. But I agree, it's good he didn't suffer too long. I raised my cockerels from babies and would be crushed if this happened to me...

This is exactly what happened to my beloved Cockerel "cock coch mawr" lastnight! He was completely fine all day and when he came home to roost my son went in to lock up and check for eggs and he was lying on the floor struggling for breath. picked him up and sat with him next to the Rayburn to keep him warm and he was rasping and i could feel his lungs were not filling, also his cone was changing colour after 10 mins he just died in my arms, Could see no signs of injuries and his throat seemed clear! I am absouletly devastated he was such a lovely friendly bird, Just wish i knew what had happened it all seemed so quick!! Just found this site now whilst looking for answers!

We took Brewster to the lab this morning. As soon as we get report we will let y'all know what they found.

ok, got the report back from lab about Brewster. Vet says he had Visceral Gout and was severely dehydrated. Now, we watch our birds every day and he was drinking just fine. We always keep fresh water available at all times. Not sure what Visceral Gout is, need to research that.
