Hi!

I have a black Amerauacana cockerel that I got specifically to go over my barred rock ladies so I can hatch sex linked chicks. I have 7ish BR and 7ish barnyard mixes. Wouldn't you know it, he has a strong preference for my barnyard mixes, I rarely see him mount the barred rocks.

I've been wondering if I could take away his favourite girls for a bit to see if he will go after the barred rocks instead.

Any ideas or experience is appreciated!

And I now know I'm not the only one with this situation! I have a SL Orp Roo, he does not like any of my BR's. I think his dislike for them is due to him being outside the run and watching the BR's reinforcing their positions in the pecking order, they are rather aggressive at times. When they are my roo raises a ruckus, and when the girls do get out of the run for some yard time, my roo will single them out for discipline...if he can catch them...he doesn't have much success.
You could try to keep him with just a couple of your BR's and watch to see how it goes...I tried it myself and it didn't turn out so good, I had to pull the BR's out of the roo pen

Have you checked their eggs for the bullseye? He may be getting the job done when you're not looking.

I agree this would be my first check. It's the only way to know if you really do have a problem.

I assume they are all laying. A cockerel or rooster has a preference for hens that are laying. I'm not sure what "7ish" means. Is that their age in months or the number you have?

Can you tell your BR eggs apart form your barnyard mix eggs? You may need to separate them anyway to be sure which are BR eggs. And yes, if it turns out you do have a problem, separating the BR and cockerel from the mixes should help. As he is a cockerel and not yet a rooster he may still have some growing up to do before all the females accept him.

I have a new rooster in with a harem of 7 hens this year. I see and hear the other 2 roosters getting after their hens all the time when I'm out there but I have yet to hear or see rhat one cover one of those hens yet I'm hatching eggs from him all along. Dont know when he does it but he's getting the job done. Just because you don't see it doesn't mean it isn't happening.

My rooster Pepper prefers the 3 white hens I have. Maybe put him in a little cage with a barred rock. He won't have no choice but to like her. Change hens every day for a week, then let him out. Maybe that will work.
