I have my 3 chickens. Everyday when I walk out to the pen Spot will hop onto the nest box, which is at the wall I'm standing in and scratch the ground with his feet almost like he's dancing. I don't know why he's doing it. He did just lose one of his girls, we had to cull her. He didn't really start this until a few weeks ago. He is an 8 month old cochin and the "spring fever" has gotten to his hormones. I don't know if he's courting me or what.

He's trying to show you that he is boss. Your his hen. Don't let him because it will get worse. Pick him up and carry him around to show him that he is not and that you are top roo.

My rooster would dance around the hens.. Looked like an Irish jig.... It's courting.

Hi there, Our roosters do it around the hens before they leap on them ! We call it the " chicken dance" . very funny to see but they are just being males I suppose !

He's never been aggressive He's the sweetest thang. He'll sit out your shoulder and eat yogurt from you hand. (or anything food wise you offer). He's never spurred and he just goes it before I open the gate for them to free range, then he stops.

He's just dancing for you.

Our Cochin rooster, Foghorn, will do this, and so will our young RIR/Red Star rooster, Juno, yet they won't attack us. They are the sweetest little roosters ever! They will dance around us (and Foghorn will dance around us when we open the coop door, like yours does) but they do it in a friendly way. Marty, our RIR rooster, on the other hand, is a different story. :rolleyes He is all sweet and loves to be held, but some days he is nice and others he will dance around me and then try to face off. But if I just stand there he will stop and then I pick him up for his "punishment"...although it's not really a punishment because he likes to be held...oh well.

As long as he's not showing aggressive behaviors, your rooster should be fine. He's just dancing for you, similar to what he does with his hens.
