Please help!!! I came home yesterday from work and was tending to my flock when I saw my rooster’s eye swollen shut with congealed blood hanging from it! I brought him inside and cleaned it as best I could with solution, put Vetericyn eye gel on it and gave him his own spot in a covered dog crate in the garage. I called around and no vet I could find will see him or they’re going to charge me $300 just to walk in the door which I really cannot afford. After work today I gave him half a baby aspirin to help with the swelling and the pain. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! This is the first time I’ve ever had to deal with anything like this.

Sorry about your rooster and it sounds like you're doing everything you can for him at home. It looks like the third eyelid was damaged... it's hard to tell from the pictures if it's just swollen with a blood clot stuck to it or if it was actually torn (in which case a vet would be best to remove the damaged part, but I do know just how expensive they are). I'd keep rinsing it with an eye wash and use terramycin eye ointment if you can get it. Hoping for the best...

Sorry to hear about your rooster. I couldn't help but notice the black spots on his comb. Is that normal for him? Is that dried blood? Or is that something else?

It’s dried blood. I tried getting it off but he was already in so much distress I decided to leave it alone for right now. It doesn’t appear to be from any lacerations on his comb, looks like is all from the eye.

Thank you very much. It looks to me like it’s very swollen with a blood clot on the end. I tried holding a soaked gauze pad on it to loosen it and gently get it off, but it’s not going to happen without picking it off forcefully which I don’t want to do. But then again I’m not an expert on chicken eyes and the third eyelid…
