Rooster feather loss and red skin

I am getting it today. They only have the liquid form, but I read it works as well by putting some drops on the skin.

After a long discussion the vet gave me liquid Ivermectin. Said to apply 2 drops at the base of the neck and 2 drops at the base of the tail, today and one more time after 2 weeks.

I also tricked the roo into eating garlic by inserting it into meat (he loves sausages). I will also keep applying the spray for the deplumed areas every two days. Fingers crossed.

I see A TON of threads about mites, so I will keep you guys updated, this might help someone down the road (if we are successful).

48h later. I decided on 2 drops on the skin at the base of the neck and 1 at the base of the tail. 4 drops seemed too much.

Anyway, pic related, the skin looks a shade less red and the swelling has gone down significantly. I don't have a pic from the back, but the red skin was swollen and visible all the time from any angle while now it is almost covered by the remaining feathers with the swelling gone down. The roo is more energetic as well and pecks less at his feathers/skin.

It is too early, but I think the ivermectin is doing its job. I will keep giving him some garlic every other day and spraying a wound healing spray every 2-3 days.

@orelsi, I just left the vet with a couple of my Black Copper Marans. He said they have the same thing. I'm about to treat my flock with Ivermectin. How is your Roo doing?

He is doing much better. It has been 5 days, the swelling has gone down, the red areas on the belly and legs are more pink than red now and he seems calmer with no feather pulling/loss. The Ivermectin works as far as I can see.

There is still nasty red skin around the vent, the mites' favourite spot, but I hope it clears with the second Ivermectin application. I will post pictures at some point.

I hope your boys do well, Marans are awesome.

Do you have pictures by the way? For comparison.

Unfortunately I got a stomach bug overnight & barely got out to open the chicken pens this morning. I have an automatic coop door that lets them into a small pen but then I have to open a door to a larger pen for them.
I’m glad I got everyone treated yesterday. I have a mixed flock, 30 Hens & 1 roo. Several of my Black Coppers seem to get the worse of it. They look like your boy. More than half have a slight case. I’ll try & get some pics tomorrow when I’m feeling better. Thanks for sharing your info. My vet had said to treat once & then 2 weeks later. After researching how difficult they are to get rid of, I think I’ll go with your regimen.
