And yes - maggots will hatch within hours in a hot climate. They also grow very quickly in warmth. Wounds also get very nasty within a few hours if it is warm and it draws flies.

Hoping for the best for your little trooper.

We absolutely have, he is tough. I am very proud of him for hanging on this long. I am hoping he can continue to do so. Thank you for the thoughts.

oh my .... been following this thread ..... I am so sorry to you !! Its so hard seeing a pet hurt !! You did an amazing job thus far .... hope he can heal - Ill be praying !!! How is the other roo -- didnt you say there was a fight ??

The comb being open to the sinus is my biggest concern. I am very worried about that and hoping there is something they can do to repair it...If putting him down is the only option then that is the route I will have to take, as much as it would hurt me.
-The other rooster did not survive...

-Thanks again for the kind thoughts.

Just an update for those who are wondering about his condition, he went into the Avian Vet yesterday and began treatment. He is now on 2 injectable antibiotics and a feeding tube. The vet said the next 24-48 hours are very crucial. They also administered a pain killer and anti inflammatory. There is a severe infection in his comb and head area. The vet said if they can get the antibiotics working on that then he has a good chance of pulling through. Will post updates as I get them.

Sorry for your heartache! Hang in there!

Make sure you watch your coop area for the next few days, or have someone else do so if you cannot, to see if there are any lingering predators. They'll come back if they think there's a chance for some type of meal. I know you think it was the other roo, but based on those pictures you took, it seems unlikely. Weasels can squeeze through the tiniest of holes!
