Rooster finally went for my husband

My rooster attacked me from behind too. I started charging at him when he ruffled his feathers and popped him with a flyswatter. Darn rooster jumped on my back when i bent over to shut the doors. He has quit since I challenged him and he got "beat" with a flyswatter.

They sure get big 'tudes'

Well his lesson didn't stick long. He made a charge at me today, but I was ready for him and he ate boot several times. I don't think this ol' boy is ever going to figure it out. So long as he can't get more than a foot off the ground in his assaults I doubt I'll do him in. We'll see if my opinion changes when he gets his spurs.

How is your DH's dignity doing? Moments like those never happen when you have a video camera! Of course if they aired him dragging it backward through the door you would have a well known and well financed group on your door with picket signs!! Then the roo could flog them!!

They always seem to attack from the rear or when someone is bent over. Don't let them get away with it. Chase them around the chicken yard until they know who is boss.

Turn the garden hose on them and watch the little cowards run and hide. They really hate that.

thats pretty darn funny... my husband always laughed at me when our demon-rooster, Fred, went for me at first... he just snickered and would tell me to cowboy up and show him who was boss! well, now our littlest rooster (aptly named "Little Rooster" - a mix of white leghorn and welsommer) intentionally looks for and flys at my DH everytime he walks outside!

i dont have any problem at all with Little Rooster... but that demon, Fred, knows that if he even looks sideways at me i just call our biggest German Shepherd who just loves the command "get that rooster!" (insert non-lethal and very comical barnyard chase here)

unfortunately Little Rooster's days are numbered as the pot beckons... i'm stuck with Fred tho.

thanks again for the laugh!

My chicken coop has an upper hatch door which allows me to add feed at shoulder height. The chickens are about waist high in that part of the coop. Rusty, my #1 roo wants to protect the coop so comes over and tries to peck at me. I let him peck at my hand which is full of feed and at the first peck he has food and will start to eat from my hand.

Whenever Rusty drops a shoulder and starts to dance in my direction I try to grab him and hold him. I have to avoid his flapping wings until I get him craddled in my arms. I will stroke his waddles and comb and pet him all over including his legs.

He now has over 1" spurs and is "relatively" gentle. Meaning once I pick him up he doesn't fight against me. I have been told that this technique is called "gentleing". He still has to act like he is the boss of the back yard... But he knows if he gets too close I just may have to pick him up and give him a treat.
