Hey everyone, I've got a 1 year old Rooster that has recently become very weak and has stopped crowing, he was very active and talkative before, his comb has also lost a lot of color.
I looked him over today and found what looks to be a bunch of lice and their eggs under his wings. I'm not sure if there were mites too, his symptoms sound like mites though? All the girls seem to be doing fine

I got some permethrin powder today and gave him a bath with it, I'm really worried about him, is there anything else I should be doing?

Creepy crawlies can take a lot out of a chicken. Treating everyone is a good idea. Once he is an inhospitable location they can move on to other birds. You should treat the coop as well. Be careful with powdered treatments. Chicken respiratory systems is very sensitive.

You will need to retreat in a week to 10 days depending on what bug it is.

Keep in mind, sometimes lice or mites can overwhelm a weak bird. Check his breast musclr, abdomen and crop. Is it emptying overnight? Eyes and mares clear? Vent clear? Do you know if he’s been eating, pooping, preening, dust bathing and keeping up with his roosterly duties of watching over the flock? I just want to make sure you don’t miss something.

Hi @micstrachan he has gotten noticeably thinner, I know he has been eating though and I got him to eat a bunch after I gave him the permethrin bath earlier by mixing some yogurt with the crumbles. I havent really caught him pooping and i havent seen any preening and I dont think I've ever seen him dust bath before.
He's also quit watching over the flock like he has been

He was a very strong healthy bird its sad to see him like this

He may be overrun with internal parasites as well. Can you collect some of his poop and have a fecal float done? The laying down photo is especially worrisome to me. Is he walking normally? Poor guy. Has he separated himself from the flock? He may benefit from having a heat source available. What are your temps like where you are at night?

I was assuming it was lice eggs?
He does walk but he doesnt do it very much or very fast
I'll have to separate him to that I guess, he hasnt exactly separated himself but he doesnt really interact with them at all
its in the 50s at night here

There are pictures of common chicken pests at that link. I agree that the feathers look like they have lice eggs on. Right now getting rid of the lice and getting him feeling better are top.

In the 50s at night might be chilly for him. If you can bring him into somewhere warmer it could do him some good. I would watch his stress levels though. Over stressed from being away from the flock can cause more problems.
