I have 6 hens, no rooster. Five are laying, and have been for about two weeks. Will a hen take over the responsibility of overseeing if there is no rooster? Or is one hen just a little slower to produce? They are all the same age. I raised them from chicks.
Thanks a bunch. kakb

Yes, a hen will usually take the roosters roll as leader if there is no rooster.

While a hen will assume a leadership role in an all hen flock, that does not preclude her producing eggs so it is likely your one non-producer is just not yet at the point of lay as quickly as the others in your flock. Just as with people, they all do things in their own time.

Thank you all. Patience is the order of the day.
