Speckles is a curious sort of roo for me.He is highly intelligent.
When I first bought him I though he was a hen.I went to Stockyard Auction outside of Rock Hill,SC and wanted to get a hen.I sold three roos and didnt want another yet.We had Bumpus our bantam roo and one of Houdinis offspring( it was a barred game roo).
Well the person next to me was selling a ton of chickens and speckles too.He said it was a hen,so I bought it.Lo and behold to my amazement it was a roo.
I brought it home and put him in the sick box for 30 days. Then released him with the others. He immediately became a nuscience when he tried to mate with my DW muscovy ducks.I started getting tired of DW complaining of him doing that to her ducks and seeing this new bozo doing this.
We didnt have a dominant roo at the time(houdini got dispached because of aggressiveness, and houdini jr was acting like his father),so it was time that I had a heart to heart talk with Speckles. At this time of no dominant roo,Gruesome our barred rock hen was crowing in place of the roo.
I caught Specks and told him in his ear Now you can have Whitie( the white leghorn), Shy ( the buff orp), Eagle( the light brahma), and another of your choice, but thats it. Later that day he was surrounded by those three hens. Very astounding!!!
The bared rock game roo(houdini jr.) became too much of a problem,so a week later he became dinner.I then went out to Specks and told him your king of the flock now. They are at your disposal. He heard that and went to mating with ones he never did!!! True facts!!
Well it all comes down to spring fever now.He was running after Bumpus in the enclosed run an coop.I just have had about enough,so I made a security corner for Bumpus and the other bantams. When I saw that Speckles tore Bumpuss comb and blood was on his back because of the comb, and on a water bottle,I made the secure area a chicken jail.
Speckles hated it and sat down on the bedding most of the time in there. If he had an harmonica,he would have been playing it constantly.
Now since hes been out, there havent been instances.Hes a little shy of me now,and fears that I will put him back in jail I guess.
He perches at night with Hen-Boss Noseeher(partridge rock hen).Noone else is allowed on their perch. He makes sure they all are in the coop at night, and they sleep on their perch in the run.
And thats my smart boy Speckles.
