I've heard of hens crowing before, but this?

He was also making those same kind of sounds that he makes when he's found some juicy bug that he wants to share with his girls.

That's Durabilt modular storage bin; comes with its own lid and already has the right sized opening and a lip to hold in the shavings. Since it's plastic it's also easy to clean.​

Hens are most receptive to mating right after laying an egg. So I suspect that he's "in the mood" and trying to tempt one of the hens to lay.

That, and sometimes roosters will try to find the best places for his girls to lay eggs. Roosters may not do much, but when it comes to their hens, they'll most likely do what they can to 'commit'.
