Rooster...in the...nesting box!?!?!?!

So my EE roo seems to like sitting the nesting box...clucking happily away. He'll sit up and move the hay around, throw it over himself like a hen, squat down and hum and cluckle. Its weird. I've seen him do it 2-3 times now...nobody else I talk to has had that happen! I wish I had pictures for everyone

Seems everytime he does it, I don't have my phone or the camera on me!!!! GRRRR! I'll catch him one of these days...just has anyone had this happen to them? Gender curiosity? Or gender confusion (hehe)? He doesn't sit on the eggs though. Leaves that to the hens.

I have seen my Marans rooster get into the nest with a hen who was trying to lay. I thought that was weird. Not sure what he was doing... coaching or mating?

He's showing the hens a good safe place to lay. My roosters do it all the time.

One of our boys does that, exactly how you described it. It is completely normal. He is just finding and making a safe nest for his ladies, like the good hubby he is. Not to worry, you don't have a transgender rooster, just a sweet one.

My roo does the same thing. He escorts our hen (we have other girls, too, who aren't laying yet) into the coop and often hangs out on the ramp while she is in the nest box, or makes a nest for himself next to the nest box and stays there while she lays. I tell him that he's a good boy, even though he's abandoning the other four girls to watch over his favorite! He is a very good roo, though

My daughter says that he is our hen's "labor coach." Ha!

I was grooming the horses today and I heard Stan the Man cackling the egg song along with the gals. Should have seen the expression on the horses' face! I peeked in the window and there was Stan trying his best to fit in a nest box without messing up his tail feathers.

Of course when he sees my face he backs out and pretends he was never there.
