Hi one of my Roosters is panting really hard and he has a very messy butt and also feels quite hard around his vent area. I don’t know what his problem is!! Any ideas?

My phone storage is full so I can’t take pictures right now, sorry☹️

Can you clean off his butt and make sure there is no hard dried poop blocking his vent?

Has he been eating? How does his crop feel? Does he feel thin?

He is pooping so there’s nothing hard right now but his poop is really runny and yesterday and today he has had a little food and water in his crop and he does feel skinny like this has been going on and I haven’t noticed.

When was the last time you wormed them? How old is he?

Will he eat anything? Oatmeal or rice might help with the messy poop. But it's hard to know what is causing it.

I can't think of anything that could cause a roosters backside to feel hard unless he has a tumor or some kind of injury. But someone else may come along with an idea of what it could be.

Welcome To BYC

Can you please post photos of your rooster and his issues?

Where are you located in the world?

What do you feed, including treats?

Do you provide grit (crushed granite) for your birds?

How old is he?

Check him for lice/mites, see that he's staying hydrated. If he's not drinking well, then give him sugar water to see if that perks him up.

Once he's drinking, then offer wet mushy chicken feed to eat. You can add bits of cooked egg to help entice him.

If you can provide more information and photos, we may be able to offer better suggestions.

I wormed him probably a year ago. I think he might be around five years old. He has been eating, which is good. I might be able to get him to eat oatmeal or rice, yeah I can’t think of anything that might cause a rooster to have a hard back end.
