rooster mounting pullets

Just this morning I told my SO that my chickens are playing mind games with me.
I had a golf ball disappear out of a nest about a week ago. I looked all over in the different nests for it, lifted the hay out and shook it, and just couldn't find it. I assumed it got buried in the litter and we'd find it when we cleaned out the coop.
This morning it was back in the nest it went missing from.
Now tell me how they pulled that one off?!?

They secretly had it hidden in the rafters. They have been watching you while doing an experiment on how to confuse a human. Today, they realized that you were showing no more outward signs of confusion or curiosity, so they put it back. Now...what will you do tomorrow? Or better yet, what will they do?

Missing? Will they eat them?
I know I have found them kicked out before. The first time I put them back, since then I have removed them from that box. I thought maybe they discovered my trick and were shunning the balls.

No I meant would it be rather disappointing to come home only expecting golf balls, to not even find the golf balls.

Ok, maybe that would be more confusing than disappointing.

I know they won't eat them...but to just go and disappear would be very odd. I might think I had alien chickens who sent the golf balls to their mother ship to find out why I thought it was an egg.

With my little band of feathered riff raff there's no telling.
