My new neighbor

Three months ago a new neighbor moved into a rent house across the way from my (rurally zoned) property. Since that time rooster crowing throughout the day has become increasingly persistent. The crowing starts at 5:00 a.m. and continues an hour or two past dark. I would estimate that during a one minute time span there are an average of 15 crows bringing the total per day to about 14,000. Yesterday I was working in the garden and a straw drifted down a broke the camel. I drove over to this neighbors house to see exactly why he was trying to drive me insane. As soon as I pulled into the drive, it was obvious he was raising game cocks. In his front yard there were at least 20 individual pins. During the course of our conversation he explained he had over 100 chickens on the property, with about half being roosters. He said that raising the game cocks was a family tradition and he enjoyed having them around. His story was that he sells a few and is just waiting until the laws are changed so he can go back to the good old days.

Now I love chickens and I usually have a large flock of my own but this is ridiculous. Oklahoma has a very strict law prohibiting the raising of birds for the intent of fighting but there is no proof. My only request is that my quiet country home become peaceful once again.

I have always found my answers without needing to post but this one just wasn't covered in the database adequately. Has anyone had experience with this sort of situation and if so what can I do.

Thank You.

Great to see the same ol' attitude is still around, here I was beginning to think people weren't so judgmental.. Just because we've got gamefowl, people think we're doing something illegal.. I've got 26 birds right now, about that many eggs in the incubator, and about 20 eggs on wait and steady collecting more everyday. Do I fight? No, I do not. But they have been in my family four generations, and I don't intend to get rid of them because some people see them as a worthless breed.

Hey Pistol Pete - you do have a bit of a problem there. But this might not be the place to talk about it... BYC has a rule against posting about cockfighting. If you have questions about it, maybe you can PM one of the Moderators and they can steer you to help with your problem...

from minnesota sorry about all the noise

There's got to be some law limiting the amount of roosters one can have, no? Fighting cocks or just pets, that many will disrupt the neighborhood. You're entitled to peaceful enjoyment of your property. I say call Town Hall.

I'm not even allowed to have 1. (but I do

I don't want any laws saying how many roosters you can have, not if you live outside the city. Half of the chicks my hens hatch grow up to be roos.

I am not posting against cockfighting. I really have no opinion on the matter and no problem with any particular breed, my problem is with the noise. There is only one reason I bring up the law, it is the only reason I can fathom why someone would subject themselves to 50 individually pinned roosters.

I will state it again for clarity 14,000 daily crows, which is practically constant. My brother has a coon dog and its bay is incredibly annoying, try to imagine 10 coon dogs baying 15 times every minute for 15 hours every day.

Like many posted, dont focus on the breed just the quantity. My father had hundreds in his property (in Puerto Rico) and they were all individually caged because they would FIGHT TO DEATH if left to roam free. My story and perspective is a little different because my dad is in Puerto Rico which still allows cockfighting (some days of the week). My dad's property was extremely remote so the neighbors were not bothered. You should look into the limitions of quantity without assuming he is fighting the birds.
