Our 5 mo white leghorn rooster had a horse crow for 3-4 days, now he hasn't crowed for 2 days. He's not mating or eating (very little if any). We thought he may have hurt his voice box with his very loud and often crows. His comb and wattle are very bright red and he did drink a little water this morning. It appeared that he was trying to poop this morning, but very little happened. Could he be constipated? He's our only rooster and I'd hate to lose him. We do not have a poultry vet nearby. Any advise or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Sorry for your loss. He may have had constipation or an obstruction in his gizzard or large intestines. Did he have access to granite poultry grit to help with digestion? What did he eat? If you want to see what happened, you could open his abdomen and look inside his gizzard and at other organs, to see if there was anything unusual. Or contact the state vet in early morning to get a necropsy, but keep his body cold in a cooler on ice.

Thank you! No, not poultry grit, they stay in a large run during the day, free range for a couple hours every afternoon. I believe they get the grit they need from gravel, sand, etc from the run and yard....I could be wrong. He was eating pellets...layer pellets, the same the hens , as I couldn't keep him from eating them without separating him from the hens. I'm curious about his death, but not enough to perform a autopsy. I'm more concerned now with making sure the girls are healthy.....all seem fine now, but visually so did he.
