Hi I have a rooster that is not a yr old. I got him on Valentine’s Day and shortly after I put him in the coop with my 3 hens he started going lame in one leg then both,my hens are perfectly fine. However his left foot is currently curled in and he can’t balance and walk normally. His other foot it’s like he has no strength to stand. I have given him liquid vitamins in case and nothing feels or looks broken. I’m at a loss as to how to help him

Photos of the rooster, his legs/feet and his poop?

What do you feed your rooster?

Is he the only rooster?

What are the vitamins you've given, the dose and for how long?

Do you have Marek's in your flock?

I'd look him over for injury, lice/mites and make sure his crop is emptying overnight.
Separate him from the hens with his own food/water and see that he's staying hydrated and fed.

He eats and drinks fine, only rooster, no mareks ( hens are roaming around healthy and happy), we did find out he had a massive lice/ mite problem and rubbed him down with diatomaceous dirt and put it under the fresh bedding in the coop and preen queen on top of the bedding just to cover the whole flock, right now i. Am finishing up a mix of scratch grains and layer crumbles and they free roam to eat grass and bugs, crop feels empty, ill have to see if I have pictures or get some tomorrow of his feet but no bruises, cuts anything like that and I pick him up a lot and check him over lately

If he has a severe parasite infestation, I would get a Permethrin Based Poultry dust and dust him all over very well. Repeat every 5 days. For housing, use a Permethrin Spray to treat housing, if he's been in the coop with the hens, I'd treat the hens too.

I'm sorry, DE and Preen Queen are not going to rid him of an infestation, especially of mites. Mites can cause serious illness or death of a bird. I'd start him on 1/2 tablet B-Complex daily and give him a little cooked beef (liver, hamburger) as a treat every other day for at least a week to help build him up.

I really don’t think they were mites. They were oblong and yellow looking but I could be wrong my hens also looked very clean under their feathers. But thanks for the help I’ll try it

I just wanted to add that layer feed is often on the low side for protein/vitamins and then if you start mixing it with scratch grains that is a recipe for vitamin deficiencies in your flock. I would switch to a flock raiser feed, skip the scratch and dose him with b complex. I agree with treating him with permethrin. Oblong and yellow screams lice not mites which can be just as detrimental to a chickens health.

Yeah that’s the plan for their feed. That mix is getting used up which is almost done because of the winter, temperatures getting cold and my girls like to lay in the woods and dust bath a lot and sleep when weather is good so the extra warmth from the grains. They all free roam but can get in the nesting box and he goes out and eats on grass.

so I crushed up some b vitamins put some of it in a vile and added some poultry cell to the rest of the vile. Hopefully that helps and now I just need to get the lice problem solved

Update. He is getting up more and walking slightly better than he was. I bought the gard star garden and poultry dust which has permethrin in it and the lice just started crawling to the surface and falling off of him! I put some in the coop bedding as well and in a week I will check him for lice and retreat as needed. I am still giving him my mixture for the vitamins and minerals he might need help but adding it to his water so I know he is getting it

I'm glad he's doing a little better.

Wonderful that you were able to get the poultry dust and see the lice coming off him. I'd definitely repeat in 5-7 day intervals for another couple of weeks. Likely he has Nits (lice eggs) at the base of the feathers. Treatments do not kill the eggs since they are encased in a type of hard-shell material, so it's important to dust again to kill those that hatch after treatment.
