A couple of my hens have started laying last week, I have 6 18 week Buff orpingtons.

None of them have started crowing (yet) but I'm wondering if this particular bird is a rooster or a hen.

When do they usually start to crow?

I'm within the city limits and not allowed to have roosters unfortunately.

Thanks to anyone who may know!!

That's what I was looking for and thought her feathers were kind of pointy. None of the other girls look like this chicken. Her feathers are kind of raggedy and slimmer looking then the rest.

Thanks for the info!
They're not shiny, though. That's important.

Pretty pullet. And to answer your question about when crowing begins, you will usually hear some really strange sounds coming from a little cockerel as early as 5-7 weeks. Their sounds can be quite comical at times. Full on crowing is evident by 12 weeks. This has been what I have observed with the cockerels I have had.
