Personally I though it looked more like a hen because of the up turn on the tail feathers, but I am by far no expert.

Here (s)he is from the side. The Buff Orpington, I'm told is pretty clearly a girl, but I'm desperately hopeful that the RIR is also. Thanks again for all the helpful perspective.

Unless I'm blind, I don't see even a hint of pointed saddle feathers. That's a pullet/hen.
ETA: Using the comb to judge won't work in this case. You have two different breeds there, so it's possible that the one has a bigger comb simply because they are different breeds. It's like comparing apples to oranges.

Thank you so much for your input. I really hope you're right.

I certainly wouldn't know. I was feeling down however as it would be pretty rotten luck to pick only two chicks and end up with a rooster. They're very close, too. They're never more than a foot from each other so I'd hate to break them up.

I think it's a girl, too. I was assured back a few months ago that two of my GLWs were boys - they're laying nice brown eggs now!

It's hard to tell, but I think we're getting pretty good at it!
