Got 2 new chooks yesterday and was pretty sure I selected hens as the young roosters had prominent red combs. But one is definitely more upright, aggressive and has a shiny feather on its wing. Cant see any elongated saddle feathers or anything yet. Not sure of age, but I'd guess around 8-10 weeks. The breed is a Potch koekoek (South African breed) and I know black hens can sometimes have a shiny feather or two.

Thanks everyone for replies thus far, I've managed to get some better shots of both birds, named images 1 and 2.

I'm not familiar with the breed either but neither looks to be showing cockerel signs to me. Both appear to be pullets to my eyes.

Hi,

Since this breed has cuckoo Marans in it, I wonder if the same feather barring rules apply? In the latest pictures, #1 seems to have darker barring and a little less upright in the tail, which in Cuckoo Marans would indicate a hen. #2 has lighter barring and has more of an upright posture, which in Cuckoo Marans would indicate a roo.

Keep us updated!

Yes, the roos are lighter in colour and one is slightly lighter. I'll just have to wait and see!
