Rooster pecks coiled copperhead

My rooster walked on top of a mature copperhead while coiled and was pecking it......I'm not sure he knew what it was he is crowing now and young....this is obviously his first rodeo with a snake. The snake did nothing but my wife was close and distracting all the chicks to go away....roo finally ran off due to my wife freaking out. 8 never got to see it....never found the snake. Any idea if he was headed towards the coop? Do copperheads kill chickens or try for eggs? I think my roo is nuts to be frank!
