I don't know if I'm in the correct topic.
I have a rooster and we shut him in a box at night to try and stop him making his noise,
yet he still manages to wake us up. We were told that if he couldn't strech his neck, he wouldn't make
noise but he is still managing it in the wooden box.
We also tried moving his perch and blackening the cage, but it hasn't worked.
He is also becoming territorial over our backyard and dogs (because they're are scared of him as he pecks them)
We've been told he's either a Rhode Island Red or a Booted Bantum.

The freezer is the only box that a rooster can be placed in that will insure his being quiet.

A rooster does what a rooster does. It' really not fair to him to be boxed up, so I would either give him away or, like the above post, camp freezer.

I had a RIR rooster who would start crowing at 3 in the morning. We invited him to Sunday dinner.

Does your roo have a coop at all? I insulated my coop with sheets of 3" insulating foam bought dirt cheap from a leftover materials store like Habitat for Humanity has. I gott it to keep the chickens warmer in winter but it has the added benefit of muffling the noise in a big way. I have 5 roosters and can hear them only a little bit if it's completely silent otherwise. I'm sure nighttime cricket sounds are much worse. Put some sort of wood or paneling over the insulation or they'll peck at it. You could make a mini-coop for just him pretty easily and really cheaply.

It sounds like what the others said: Your roo is doing what roos do. I don't know if he has any hens or not (may give him a distraction from the dogs) but I would think he's just protecting his perceived turf.

Good luck! I hope you can keep the big guy or find him a nice home where he can strut his stuff.

I have seen a rooster that got into some bailing twine who was on his back, essentially hog tied with his feet in the air - crow and crow as if nothing was wrong. Thinking it was a light thing, I have seen one wearing a falconry hood (making it dark around his eyes) crow as if nothing was wrong...

I do agree with WestTexasFarmboy that you can't really deny that that is what they do, and to date, not a soul has been able to change that a rooster crows - to lock him up in a box to try to make him stop will prove to be both futile and a bit mean - SO, your choices are the freezer (do it soon, older roos are like eating pencil erasers), a new home, a new spot for your coop behind the garage or barn or whatever you may have... or - you can learn to love it (tough to do at 4:45 am in the summer

What my DH and I did was to close the pop door at night, then not open it until 7:00 the next morning - we figured that was a decent hour for our neighbors, who each reported that they loved the sound of a rooster in the mornings, especially as we were giving them eggs... we continued anyway - just in case they were just trying to be nice. We could still hear him in there, crowing away - but it was muffled enough that it didn't actually wake us - I always wondered how that didn't damage the hen's hearing, with his bellowing away at top volume in a relatively closed little room like that...

Good luck with this -

My two-cents; let the poor guy be a rooster and enjoy what he has to offer. I paid extra just so I could get a rooster for sure. I know for may people roosters are too much to handle due to the noise but really a rooster is awesome to have. He protects his hens and to me sings a pretty song. If you can legally have the guy in your area enjoy him. Of course, if you have to make him live uncomfortable because he is noisey I would send him to the freezer because it isn't fair to him to locked up in a box too small for him.

I think you either love roo's or you hate 'em. Personally, I love them!! I currently have three (1 Bantam Cochin cockerel who bites, 1 Blue Splash cockerel who's sweet and 1 Buff Orpington roo who is awesome), with plans to add one more (Black Silkie). I love listening to them throughout the day - they 'talk' to each other. Rocky, my Bantam skatoolie of a cock is in a mini coop in our garage. He gets confused sometimes and crows at odd times...usually it's because either myself, my husband or one of the kids have went into the garage during the night. Makes for an excellent guard dog...kids can't sneak out with him around!! I highly recommend getting a cockerel if you have teenagers!

I would try to find him a new home before I stuffed him in the freezer. But, I'm a bleeding heart when it comes to animals. I won't even eat my own chickens!!
