Rooster? Pullet?

Hi SunnyCO,

In my opinion.....

PROS: If you have a rooster in your flock you can have fertile eggs, and therefore hatch chicks. A good rooster will maintain a sense of order within the flock, and settle any squabbles amongst the girls. He will find them tasty treats to eat, guard against predators, and lead them back to roost at night.

CONS: When they are young they can be a little rough with the girls due to their raging hormones. They can pick favourite hens who get over-mated. They may accidentally damage feathers, or pull them out during mating - particularly on the neck, shoulders and their rumps. A bad rooster can be aggressive towards both his hens and people. They crow at all times of the day and night, (I love the sound of a rooster crowing though, so that might be a 'PRO' depending on how you feel about it!) Also, many councils do not allow roosters to be kept, so you should check your local rules in that regard.
