Rooster pulling feathers off my hens!

I have 9 Hens and one Rooster. They normally get along great, but when the Rooster does his dance and has his way with a hen, he pulls out their feathers! Most of them are bald on their backs where his claw pins them down. Is there anything I can do for my hens? I really like my Rooster, so I am hoping to keep him. I am new at keeping chickens and would appreciate any advice!

Some people purchase or make chicken saddles. It's kind of like a reverse apron for hens. It's purpose is to protect back feathers from overzealous roos.

I was just reading about them and that sounds like a good idea. I was wondering if the Hens would peck at each other with them on? They love to pull at strings, clothing, etc... But I think it would be worth a try!
