I'm googling sickle hackles, but I'm still not sure EXACTLY what I'm looking for. Can you explain this to me or get some links or pictures on this, please? I understand it has to do with formation of feathers, but I'm still just not positive of what EXACTLY I'm looking for

Sickle feathers are the feathers that, in males, curve over the main tail. Hackle feathers are the feathers on the neck and saddle feathers are the feathers on the back and hips of the bird. (If a bird could wear a saddle...that's where it'd rest.

I found this AWESOME photo on photobucket:
BODYPARTS2.jpg

Number 4 = hackle feathers
Number 5 = saddle feathers
Number 8 = Main sickle feathers, but look for any that curve

I know right!! I couldn't believe the photo when I saw it! It was perfect for what I was needing!

I wish I could take credit for it, but alas, my single-color birds probably wouldn't direct attention like the multi-colored birds!

I'm neurotic:

WADDLE is something a duck does when it walks.

WATTLE is the fleshy thing hanging down below a chicken's beak.

Yup, those are wattles! Sounds just like waddles when you say it.

I usually look for the comb, wattles and pointed end hackle and saddle feathers.

Right now, I am looking at way too many around here!
