Rooster signs and weird feathers

OMG! What an adorable Frizz! Chicks with pea combs can be really hard to sex, and you may have to wait a few more weeks to be sure. These are not pure Ameraucanas though, since they do have feathered legs. Where did you get them? Can't wait to hear what colored eggs they lay!

yep, I am sticking with frizzled cochin x ameraucana(thinking true ameraucana because chicks are solid color, ee's tend to be multiple colors)

I have a frizzled rooster - love 'em, but it is hard to take a rooster seriously when he looks like Farrah Faucette did in the 80's

! I have a broody with eggs under her now from his breeding - anxious to see how they look !

I think you're right about the cochin/ameraucana cross. I have noticed that other ameraucanas do not have feathered legs.

The story of how I got them is the weirdest of them all. I do many plays at a studio nearby where I live and I was told that they were keeping baby chicks (of all things) for show. Apparently, a teacher had brought in four chicks from her own flock to show to the little kids. I had actually been looking for some chicks to get, HOW CONVENIENT! Especially since they were free because I knew the people. The person who gave them to me was not clear on what kind they were, only hearing that they were part ameraucana and part something else. I was only able to take two chicks because of how much space I have in the yard.

I was also noticing that my buff orpington hen who is lowest in the pecking order of my flock (highest being a white leghorn!) takes out her anger of being mistreated by the others on the chicks. luckily I'm there just in time to stop her from doing much harm. Will this become a problem later on?

I love your rooster's feathers, is this mutation rare?

If you are putting the chicks with the adult hens, I think you may have problems. Better to keep them in a seperate brooder so they can get bigger before integrating. The older hens will establish a new pecking order, and these little guys may not survive it.

This particular trait is one of those love hate ones! Some people LOVE frizzles, others think they look wierd. To each their own! I like them because they make me laugh - they are just funny! My roo is very gentle and sweet. He treats the girls well, and has never been aggressive toward anyone. He supposedly had Auracauna in him, but who knows - I hatched him from an egg I got from a guy on Craigs List.

The only problem is that it is only my buff orpington hen who ever seems intent on establishing her pecking order over the chicks. The other hens are surprisingly careful with the chicks. I think my orpington is just excited to establish her pecking over somebody since she is the lowest. I just hope she learns that if she kills the birds below her in rank. Who is there to rank over rather than just become lowest rank again?
