Ohh! That is terrible! I knew chickens would peck wounds, but I guess I just though of it a bullying, not eating the blood! That is gruesome!
Yes, the worst is when they go after the blood feathers on a molting hen - not that this happens every time to every hen - but if a routine 'hahahah I pulled a feather' moment turns out to be a blood feather, they learn pretty quick and they'll keep picking at the feathers to get more blood.
Especially on lower ranking hens that won't fight back- those end up on vacation until they've grown back out.
