Hi all!
I have an accidental bantam easter egger cockerel in my flock. So far he has been well behaved with only a moderately annoying crow. He and my three bantam pullets are only 3 1/2 months though.

When will I know what his temperament is like? I have two young children, a small city lot, and no patience for bad behavior. If he is a sweetie I might get away with keeping him despite the noise. If he is a jerk I’d rather part ways sooner rather than later.

Advice? Thanks!

Are you even allowed to have crowers in your area?
With little kids, I'd be tempted to get rid of him now, before his hormones really kick in(which won't be long).

City ordinance does not specify sex of the birds. I figured as long as the neighbors are okay with it I’d let him be for now.

He has started some attempts at mounting one of the hens so I assume hormones are gearing up.

I'd just wait. What a cutie!

So what will happen is he will go through the cockerel stage. Once they get through that, they are usually fantastic birds. Maybe figure out somewhere that he can go with the flock, safe from your children.

Well, it is official, the cockerel’s days are numbered. He has started charging at both my kids in the yard. Don’t have the capacity to deal with that. A little bittersweet since he is such a handsome little guy.

Ours attacked our daughter when she was 5.5 and that was that. It wasn’t days numbered, he was gone by morning. Don’t wait, if he’s already going at the kids he will continue and be more successful each time.

Yeah. We need to determine if a local contact will take him or we should cull. The goal is to be done by this weekend.

Well, Lightning the rooster went off to the local feed store this morning. The yard will be significantly quieter now. :p
