Hi, I have an 8 month old chicken which is a Wyandotte X Frizzle. He/she looks like a Rooster to me but has never crowed. Is it possible to have a rooster that doesn’t crow? Or do you think this is a hen. Have also not seen it in the nesting box but I could miss that but I have seen it jumping on other hens.
If you could please let me know your thoughts, I would appreciate it.
Thanks
Lesley

He looks like a very sweet darling. Maybe he got some damage to his voice box at some point. Does he try to crow but no sound comes out or not even try? If the latter he may just be very low status in the flock.

Oh yes, he's a cockerel... do you have another rooster? if so, then this one's not crowing for fear of being flogged. Crowing is a way to establish territory, claim resources and especially females. If you have another rooster, and the one crows, he's essentially challenging the other rooster for dominance. Maybe he's not ready for that, so he's staying silent.

If you don't have another rooster, is there one in the area? If not, then its just him waiting to find the right moment. I've seen vids of some young cockerels crowing at 2 weeks old.... and heard of other single males who didn't crow until over a year old.

He’s never tried to crow but makes other usual chicken sounds. Him and a little hen are the youngest in the flock. He’s gorgeous and loves a cuddle 🥰

Thanks that’s very informative. He’ll be the only rooster in the flock and none in the area. It would be great if he doesn’t crow as he’s one of my favourite chickens and loves a cuddle but I’ll have to re-home him if he crows as we aren’t allowed roosters in my area 😢💔
