I have an opportunity to experiment with a little cockerel that I believe imprented on me. From the day I moved him from the incubator he has been clingy, wanting to be held to sleep and even stand outside my front door squeaking at me despite the others going to the brooder at night. I keep chicks in a glass brooder and turn them loose to free rangewith during the day with the big birds at about 2mo. But he's pushing 4mo now getting into the holy terror for the poor hen's stage. I'm playing around with positive reinforcement because at the moment he has enough attachment to me at 4mo that I can kick him away from an unwilling hen and he will immediately fly into my hand if I hold it out. Because he's gotten past the point where he'll follow me like a lost puppy around the yard. Maybe I can teach him what I won't tolerate but at the same time I'm not a threat. Kind of the same concept of if I'm forced to scold him for something but I don't mean any harm to him but won't tolerate that behavior.

He comes from my 2 friendliest birds. To put it into perspective. The hen brings her new hatched chicks to me (3 hatches last year) as soon as she leaves the nest with them and they run to me or her when an alarm call goes out depending on who is closer and no other chickens. The father has a rooster type of respect where he doesn't want to be touched but hangs out within feet of me and watch's the flock. When walking towards him and say his name I've actually got to step over his tail walking by (he's a Phoenix, long tail) and I move him and 3 other hens off the coop door every night to shut the door and he stands up and steps back on my hand when his name is called. Last fall we had a small hawk attack, it was after a song bird but the chickens were under the tree it happened in. I was standing halfway between the attack and home. The hen's flew back to the house to safty and he landed and stayed beside me with his chest puffed and wings pointed at the ground facing the hawk as the hen's went into hiding.

Your plan seems to be a good one. Sounds like you understand rooster behavior and it should enable you to give this little fan boy of yours good direction as his hormones come in. Update this thread as you go. We all love good serial entertainment.
I'm hoping he survived. Heard a chicken right before I went out to close everything up. 5 dead and at least 12 missing. Fox was killing them and dropping them in the field before going back for another. He circled my whole yard about 150yds out for the next hour or 2.

Update, Squeaks servived last night. Fox is still at large. I found 2 alive from the 2mo group of 15. I sold a bunch from the 4mo group last month so not sure how many was left but half of the 6 I found in the yard was from that bunch. Free ranging you'll lose one occasionally but a waistful killing spree like that and leave them laying just pisses me off. Even if he'd taken all of them he couldn't have eaten them before they rot. I've noticed a couple hen's missing but no evidence of an attack and a few going broody and hoped they were hiding on eggs somewhere. Then noticed my big rooster missing yesterday morning I knew something was up, so left my windows open so I could hear if anything did happen.

Foxes will kill as many as they can then carry them back to the den one by one. To lose as many chicken as you've lost I suspect you have a pair with kits. (They typically mate in Dec and Jan and will have 4-6 kits each spring)The female will only get a new mate if her mate dies and he will remains single for life if she dies. They can have multiple dens in a 20 mile area and seemingly come out of nowhere and kill all your chickens. If you don't find their dens they'll teach their kits to hunt your chicken too.Sorry for your loss! They will be back be prepared!

Yea I put 2 dead chickens in each of my live traps and going to sit in the coop before dark so I'll already be in there after dark. Theres a light outside the coop shining out in the yard and dark inside. Maybe it'll come back to check the menu before he knows I'm there. I don't know if he's smart or lucky but everytime he came out in the open last night he ether had a house or town behind him.

How do they kill them? Grab and shake like a dog I assume. Only 1 out of the 5 I found had any blood at all on it and that was just enough to wet a couple feathers.

They bite them in the neck & crush their windpipe and bite their heads off sometimes.

You can lure them by using sounds of prey animals such as rabbits, etc over a speaker, etc.
